    On the Obverse
, the Bolivian Coat of Arms, that includes an elegant landscape with an Alpaca (or Llama), a sheaf of wheat, and fruit tree in the foreground of two mountains, Mt. Cerro Rico of Potosi (a centre of early silver mining, in the 15
    th
Century, that the Spanish used in funding the exploration of the New World) and Mt. Cerro Minor, with a small hut (possibly the Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus) on the smaller of the two mountains. Behind that the smiling sun rises high over the robust mountains. This landscape is surrounded by the large and proud lettering that reads “REPUBLICA DE BOLIVIA” and nine stars representing the Departments (or States of Bolivia).
The Departments of Bolivia with their capitals in parenthesis:
    Beni (Trinidad)
    Chuquisaca (Sucre)
    Cochabamba (Cochabamba)
    La Paz (La Paz)
    Oruro (Oruro)
    Pando (Cobija)
    Potosí (Potosí)
Santa Cruz (Santa Cruz de la Sierra)
    Tarija (Tarija)
    The Reverse
of the coin has a large Caduceus in the center. The Caduceus is a complicated symbol attributed to the Greek god Hermes (or Mercury – basically the Roman equivalent to Hermes), although evidence of the use of this symbol dates back even further into Sumerian/Babylonian times. It's a symbol of negotiation, trade, and commerce, three realms in which balanced exchange and reciprocity are recognized as ideals. This concept born of Hermes in Greek times is still consistent with modern times, making it not unusual to see such a powerful symbol on a coin. For example, the Caduceus can be seen printed on Roman coins dating back to the 1st Century. The Caduceus is also recognized as a symbol of peace and/or diplomacy, important concepts for a country to display on their coinage, as well. Of course, as to the nature of the God Hermes, he was also believed to have invented coinage, as it was that his staff (the Caduceus) was often used to symbolized commerce.
