For sale is this authentic Asante goldweight that was carefully made of fine brass by skilled artisans. This piece is anthropomorphic in style, looking like a tribal man. It is decorative, and boasts the tribal artwork of the era. It is well made and is solid and dense. This piece is old, as these were commonly used from 1400-1900 AD! The style of this piece, and lack of wear makes me think that these are more modern pieces (likely the later part of that time frame, or even more modern). I did a lot of research in the process of listings. From what I found, Gold was a status symbol for Asante people. Jewelry was hand made for high up people, and gold dust was even used as currency once. It was weighed on a special type of scale. The counter balances were made of less expensive bronze weights. Many of these were cast of the bronze using the lost wax technique to make them more decorative. The goldweights were called mrammuo. They are key in African art, manufacturing, decor, class, and style! They teach us so much about culture past. The Akan began producing gold weights based on the Islamic and Sahelian ounce (commonly used in trade to the north). The creativity, art, and beauty of the gold weight, would have been dependent on the wealth of the person buying it to be used for trade. It is cool to think of what this piece might have been used for! Perfect for any collection! Don’t pass it up!
