Description
Presenting a Ultra RARE pair of 1950s Hartley speakers. These are the " GRAND " Boffle cabinets w/ (4) 217 10" - 4 ohm Full Range Speakers in each. Top of the line at the time.
Super innovative Hartley design. Grills are so cool and unusual.
I opened one to show its unique many layer BOFFLE damped design.
The last single Hartley 217 I seen sold went for 3.....thats 0 just for the 8 speakers and no cabinets.
I have the History of Hartley loudspeakers book and its speaks about the cabinet design.
The book is a incredible read. What a history they had. Most have no Idea the impact they had on the audio industry.
They book is for sale on ebay by the owner of Hartley who wrote it. SIGNED AND NUMBERED COPIES.
This pair was purchased from the original owner.
They were being driven by HH Scott Monoblock Tube Amps and Preamps.
These speakers just never turn up for sale.
Comes Complete with Custom Roll around dollys.
Google and Researh HARTLEY BOFFLE if you have any intetest in its design.
Hartley designed and sold his 'Boffle' speaker, which was apparently the first attempt to remove the effects of the rear bass radiation from speaker cones.
This goes back to the 30s
The holes in the rear panel actually radiate some deep low end
Off the Net:
H. A. Hartley was the man who first coined the phrase 'high fidelity' .
It was originally a UK company, founded by him and P.K. Turner, but they did well in export sales. He wrote a book about how to do it, in fact, & sold all the manufacturing rights to his US distributor when he retired.
At one point, the manufacturing capacity of the company was a mere 3 drivers per day & the advertising that they published said:
Please don't pass this on to a friend.
Almost no-one knows Hartley speakers and we'd like to keep it that way".
