Overall Condition
Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents, and have been treasured by several owners.   Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use.  We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings.  Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage.

This old hunter's tunic comes from the Bamana people of Mali. Bamana hunting-related items are well-known and quite sought-after, and collectors love these pieces since they almost always have a fascinating array of protective and "good-luck" amulets attached to their surface. Our tunic is old authentic examples of Bamana hunter's tunic richly decorated with multiple small leather fetish packets sewn on and filled with unknown magical substances. The amulets intend to ensure a successful and safe hunting. The wilderness is regarded as both dangerous and valuable, both as a source of food and as a source of spiritual gifts. The amulets provide safety and its contents were known only to the owner. This was one item of a hunter outfit that would include  a hat, a tunic ,and a pants or a skirt.  This is an old jacket dates from the  late nineteenth or early twentieth century. Besides its poor condition, it remains piece for what it represents for the Bamana culture.
The artistic diversity of the Bamana is without doubt one of the most astounding and confounding, of all West African groups. Like their western neighbors the Dogon, complex religious, funerary, initiation, and agricultural rites have resulted in an enormous pantheon of ritual objects.

For these reasons, our shipping and handling charges may be more than the price of postage. .
International Shipping

We offer uninsured USPS First Class airmail, insured Priority airmail, and insured Express airmail to most parts of the world, depending on the weight, volume, and value of an item. We also ship via FedEx or DHL on request.
