This is an original ceramic stein or mug depicting a University of Pennsylvania football player on one side and the seal of the university on the other.
Located in Philadelphia and a member of the Ivy League, Penn was founded in 1740 by Benjamin Franklin.
The football player bears the signature "F. Earl Christy" just below the illustration.
Christy (1883-1961) was an American illustrator famous for his depictions of pretty women.
Christy was born in Philadelphia and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
As a young commercial artist in the early 1900s, he created numerous illustrations of attractive girls and student athletes representing Ivy League and other major colleges, which were published in postcard form, as well as on prints, ceramics, and fabrics.
In the 1920s and 1930s, Christy's romantically idealized portraiture was frequently seen gracing the covers of numerous movie magazines.
